Looking Forward
Yesterday was the last day of my beginner course at Scratch Academy. Next up is an intermediate level course that involves mixing different genres of music & teaches the ins and outs of putting together your set and actually executing it.
The instructor of the course is also the director of the Academy. He told us his goal is to take us out of our comfort level and force us to adapt, because DJing isn’t always going to be easy. He’s going to force us all to learn to mix songs in genres we don’t like. For me, I’m going to have to learn to DJ Death Metal. One girl is going to have to learn to mix salsa music. Because if you can learn to mix music that you don’t even listen to, then mixing genres you enjoy and listen to regularly shouldn’t be an issue. We’re also going to be put through scenarios, such as having a gig in a department store, a wedding or a child’s birthday. You have to be able to follow the rules set for each scenario, such as playing clean music or only Top 40. At the end of the class, we all have to create a 5 song set list of our choosing and mix it live in front of everyone at the Academy. I can’t wait.
I’ve always wanted to do this, and thought it might not ever happen. But to see everything coming together so rapidly just makes me thankful. A lot has gone on in recent months that put me in quite the rut. But I’m thankful that I finally get to do something that makes me happy. And also thankful for my friends. My friends and this new experience are what has kept me going. And so I am thankful and looking forward to making the future a positive one, however possible.
